The most common form of gum disease is gingivitis. Patients with gingivitis may experience soreness, redness or swelling of the gums. The gums may also bleed while brushing or eating. Left untreated, gingivitis can progress to a more significant form of gum disease called periodontitis.
Patients with periodontitis are at risk of the gums receding, allowing the infection to compromise the bone underneath. The infection can cause severe damage to the tissue and bone and, eventually, tooth loss, so it is vital that a dentist diagnoses and treats any gum problems before they reach this stage.
