The exact process used will vary depending on the position and current health of the tooth. Our dentists usually perform extractions under local anaesthetic, but you can request sedation if you are anxious about the procedure. More difficult cases — like the extraction of wisdom teeth — may require an incision in the gum or a minor surgical procedure.
Once a tooth is extracted, a blood clot will form in its place and the healing process will begin. It’s unlikely your dentist will need to use any stitches to close the wound. It’s important to follow any post-operative advice your dentist gives you to avoid dislodging the blood clot, which can lead to a painful condition called “dry socket.”
Advice includes sticking to soft foods for a day or two, limiting activity and avoiding spitting, rinsing or drinking through a straw. You may experience some discomfort after an extraction, so take painkillers like paracetamol and ibuprofen as needed.
